Summer cottages can be of the most intricate form, and not only in terms of their borders, but also in relief. Often, these are not just flat areas where you can build houses and plant plants, but they are also not particularly convenient, with hillocks, slopes and even serious cliffs.
If we talk about the standard six hundredths within the cooperative, then such problems practically do not arise, but if the summer cottage is located outside the city, then it is often built near a forest or river. And here the terrain can already change very much. That is why today he speaks on the topic of slopes and slopes that need to be strengthened.
Why strengthen slopes and slopes
Many people have bypassed this task for years, and nothing ... those who are accustomed to living in the classic summer cottage mode will say so - come here in summer to plant potatoes, and leave in the fall with the harvest, and until spring. Well, we are a little different, and our cottage should be not only fruitful, but also very attractive. And also convenient, safe and extremely practical. So, everything that we build, create and even plant should be beneficial for many years. And sometimes for the sake of this, additional worries are needed.
Strengthening slopes, slopes and shores is one of these concerns, especially for summer residents who own areas with difficult terrain. There are possible gatherings of soil, scree from the top point and directly into the yard or garden, blurring the shore and leaching of the same lawn, snow and mud gathering during spring thawing, plant scrapping. These are just a couple of reasons that are already paying attention to the complexity of the problem. But it also happens that from a steep hill at the cottage not only a snow cap falls, which brings a little dirt and roots, but also multi-ton, extremely dangerous landslides that we would like to prevent.
It is clear that such precedents take place in the mountains, well, or in the territories of forests and even former construction sites, where there are slides, ravines, pits and other non-standards that lead away from a simple and even relief. But at our dachas there are also places that should be treated with caution. Therefore, let's study the methods that will help to qualitatively strengthen the slopes with your own hands.
How to strengthen a small slope with plants
If the inclined area does not exceed 8-10%, it is most advisable to strengthen it with plants with a powerful root system. Due to the planting of such herbs, grasses, shrubs and small trees, living soil reinforcement is created inside the soil, which prevents landslides and unauthorized distortion of the relief.
In this regard, do not remove plants on the slopes, if any, in the country. At the first time after the uprooting, changes may be observed, since you will break the bond of the soil. But problems can arise in the future, when the lack of plants will give problem areas the ability to quickly collapse.
Plants can be bonded and slopes up to 45%, but there are much more risks. They exist due to the fact that plants form a root system for a long time, which should reinforce the soil. Atmospheric factors also work here - the presence of precipitation, wind, humidity associated with ponds located nearby or on a slope, as well as the level of groundwater and even tremors.
Therefore, it is recommended to use additional reinforcement as biomats, which consist of coconut or straw fibers applied to the cellulose layer.
Biomats are laid on the surface of the cleaned slope and are evenly fixed. Further, the seeds of various plants are sown over the entire area of the material, which in the near future should create a single layer with biomats. It can be not only special flowers and herbs, but also plants for landscape design of a summer residence, which you yourself have chosen.
Geotextile is a dense material based on polyester or polypropylene fibers. It is artificial, but is great for a variety of jobs, as it is quite durable and has a water permeability.
Thanks to geotextiles, it is possible to strengthen the slopes at 173% or 60 °. Geotextiles are laid out on the slope and subsequently reinforced with special anchors. After final laying and fixing, you can always plant on top of the plant material, or decorate the slope with stone, gravel, or tile.
Fortification by geomats
Another way to make a quality and reliable slope is to use geomats. This material, which consists of several layers of polypropylene gratings at once, even resembles a washcloth.
But the positive side is that, along with high strength, geomats are also permeable to air, water and plant roots. That is, laying geomats on the slope will allow not only to strengthen it qualitatively, but also, as in previous cases, to plant all the necessary plants on top of the material, which will soon create a uniform and fairly dense layer.
An additional advantage of the material is the possibility of its use on slopes up to 70 °.
Exactly the same angle allows the geogrid to work. It is a material made of polyesters or glass, which is quite simple to work with.
The geogrid will help to quickly condense the topsoil, which is most prone to landslides and destruction of various kinds, as well as decorate it after the main work.
Laying the geogrid is as follows - initially, on a more or less prepared surface, the material itself is laid. Further, soil, sand or even gravel is poured into the cells of the geogrid. But the most correct way is to lay fertile soil in the cells, where you can immediately plant plants. This will make it possible to obtain the highest degree of strength to strengthen the slope in a few months.
Experts say that the geogrid is more reliable in use than the geogrid. This material is a cellular frame that stretches over the surface. After laying on a slope, the geogrid can be fixed in various ways, but the most popular is fixation with fillers. Interestingly, almost everything can be used - soil, sand, pebbles, gravel.
Further landscaping is also possible, but, as you know, this is realistic using practically any material to strengthen slopes and slopes.
Gabions on a seasonal dacha
We strengthen the slopes with gabions
We have already spoken on this subject, as well as studied gabions in other articles in detail. We never get tired of being amazed at the possibilities of simple metal structures filled with various materials inside. They are assembled quite simply, and can even be made independently in the conditions of a summer residence.
Regardless of the slope, gabion structures become a reliable reinforcement. The role is played only by the initial state of the problem area, as well as its height. The larger it is, the more difficult the task will be, but if we are not talking about mountains, but a simple suburban relief, then any problem is reduced by gabion structures to nothing.
You can set gabions vertically or lay them at the right angle. But it is worth remembering that they have sufficient weight not only to restrain collapsing plumb lines, but also for self-creeping along the surface at an angle. Therefore, it is worthwhile to reliably strengthen each structure, creating a foundation in the form of a foundation under the lowest point.
Slopes and retaining walls
In this section, we will not stop for a long time, since an interesting thematic article has already been written on the topic. We only point out the fact that retaining walls are an excellent choice for that summer resident who decided to combine the “repair” of the soil with the decoration of the site. It is also worth adding that they should be used only for slopes of small height, with low ground pressure.
Other options for strengthening slopes, slopes and shores
Often the situation itself dictates to us the choice of materials for work and the solution to the problem. The reasons may be money, time, available materials, the condition of the site, its height, remoteness from buildings, ponds, or the need to combine complex work and decor. Therefore, you need to have many options on hand, by evaluating the features of which it will be possible to establish the most suitable:
- If the cottage has a difficult relief site, its borders can be strictly defined by trees. For several years, their root system will “bind” a solid foundation, thanks to which the slope will remain in the state we need for a long time. But remember that fixation by biomats during tree planting will provide a good safety net;
- Strengthening the necessary slopes can also occur with the help of logs that dig into the required depth. Each individual case requires accurate calculations, and therefore we are not ready to state the values for the installation depth and log diameter ... it's just one of the good ways;
- It is also convenient to make a sloping slope in the form of steps by installing the same gabions or retaining walls in series, for example, along a slope every few meters. So you will secure the zone and set the original figured design at the cottage;
- Partial fastening with geomaterials is also possible, which are selected depending on the angle of the slope. Small trenches are dug under them, on the bottom of which geomaterial is laid. Further, the trench is filled up, and the edge of the material leaves the ground and goes upward, as if embracing all the soil laid in the trench. At a distance of several meters from the trench, that is, above it, the edge is pinned. After a year, you get a dense layer, which is reliable due to the reinforcement of the same grid and plant roots.
There are many more ways, but today we have described the most popular and used. Therefore, take them into service.
Such relief works are considered difficult, and therefore require a serious approach. We recommend that you first draw up a work plan and conduct accurate calculations, be sure to choose only high-quality and appropriate materials for the soil strengthening process.
