Feijoa is an evergreen tree or shrub from the Myrtle family. Plant lovers and connoisseurs will conclude from this alone that its fruits are very useful. We will add that they are also delicious. Feijoa is the only fruit with a higher iodine content than seafood. Moreover, the substance in the fruit is in a water-soluble state, which makes it easily digestible. The presence of macro- and microelements, vitamins, essential oils, antioxidants makes feijoa not only a tasty dietary product, but almost a medicine. Therefore, before eating this fruit in large quantities, you should consult your doctor.

But, if you show a sense of proportion, it will become an excellent vitamin supplement to your table. It would seem that you can cook from feijoa? Only jams and drinks. But no. It is put in salads, pastries, meat, sauces. Feijoa is even added to alcoholic drinks. We will bring you recipes for making simple dishes and drinks from this wonderful fruit in this article.

How to choose a feijoa

This fruit is exotic in our latitudes, so before moving on to the recipes, we will tell you how to choose it correctly. First of all, we note that feijoa ripens in October-November, breaks off slightly unripe for ease of transportation. You need to buy soft elastic fruits without visible damage.

If the berry is hard, the feijoa is not fully ripe. For ripening, it is laid out in a warm place for 2-3 days. Cut one berry:

  • ripe pulp is transparent;
  • immature - white;
  • spoiled - brown.

Attention! Do not eat overripe fruits - they can cause food poisoning.

You can store ripe feijoa in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. But remember that every day they lose nutrients, even though they become sweeter.

Eat or process fruit along with a thin skin. Some people peel the skin before use, as it has an overly rich taste and aroma. Do not forget that this is where most of the nutrients are located. Do not throw away the rind, but dry and add to baked goods or tea.

Raw feijoa jam

Raw jam is easiest to make with feijoa. The recipes offered by us are very simple, but the taste of the blanks will be excellent - rich, unlike anything. It will be very difficult to resist not to eat the whole jar at once. We specifically suggest making jam without heat treatment, because this way the products will retain the maximum amount of nutrients.

Raw jam

Pass a kilogram of feijoa fruit through a meat grinder. Add the same amount of sugar, stir well. Arrange in sterile jars, store in the refrigerator. To prevent raw jam from spoiling at room temperature, take twice as much sugar.

You can make a real medicine from feijoa if you grind it and combine it with honey 1: 1. A tablespoon in the morning will help you maintain strength, strengthen immunity, protect against colds, and saturate the body with useful substances.

Important! Remember that feijoa contains many useful substances, you cannot eat it in large quantities, especially if you made jam with honey.

Jam with nuts and lemon

This delicious jam is very healthy and can be stored in the refrigerator all winter.

  • feijoa - 1 kg;
  • lemon - 2-3 pcs.;
  • nuts - 300 g;
  • honey - 0.5 kg.

You can take any nuts, and increase the amount of honey if desired. Be sure to take lemons with a thin peel.

Wash the feijoa and lemons well, cut into small pieces along with the peel, grind with a blender.

Important! Do not forget to remove the seeds from the citrus, otherwise they will spoil the taste of the jam.

Chop the nuts, mix with fruits, honey.

Divide into clean jars.

Feijoa can be used to make not only supplies for the winter, but also dishes for the festive table. Of course, if you have the opportunity to cook them daily, this will not only diversify the diet, but also saturate the body with useful substances.

With two fillings

Try to surprise your guests with such an unusual salad. You can cook it with one of our suggested dressings and get a wonderful sweet dessert or an original appetizer. So, by and large, we offer you not one, but two salads in the recipe.

  • feijoa - 10 pcs.;
  • apples - 6 pcs.;
  • tangerine - 3 pcs.;
  • raisins - 100 g;
  • salad;
  • ham.

Take apples and tangerines, medium-sized, sweet. You will need the salad to cover the plate on which the dish will be served, and the ham for decoration, but each guest should be offered a piece. So take the amount of these products at your discretion.

Sweet dressing:

  • heavy cream -120 g;
  • vanilla sugar - 35 g;
  • nuts - 100 g.

Add some sweet or semi-sweet red wine if desired.

Salt dressing:

  • sour cream - 70 g;
  • sesame seeds - 1 tbsp. the spoon;
  • pepper, salt.

You can do without pepper, and put in as much salt as you want.

Comment! This recipe is a guide to action, not a clear instruction. Prepare it as we advised, and then change the ingredients as you see fit. For example, instead of ham, you can use slices of smoked chicken breast.

Rinse the raisins and soak in boiling water, then discard them in a colander.

First, cut the tangerine and feijoa slices together with the peel into pieces.

Then peel the apple, chop and immediately combine with other fruits so as not to darken.

Add raisins, stir.

Prepare the dressing of choice by simply mixing the ingredients well.

Decorate the dish with salad, put the fruit mixture in a slide.

Pour over the sauce and garnish with slices of ham on top.

Beetroot salad

It is wrong to think that only sweet dishes can be prepared from feijoa. There are many recipes where these berries are combined with a variety of vegetables. We will prepare a delicious and healthy salad with beets.

  • beets - 0.5 kg;
  • feijoa - 200 g;
  • walnuts - 10 pcs.;
  • vegetable oil - 2 tbsp. spoons;
  • salt, pepper - to taste.

Wash the beets well, without removing the skin, boil. Grate or cut into small cubes if desired.

Important! If you trim the tail of the beet before cooking, a lot of nutrients will go into the water.

Chop the feijoa.

Peel the nuts, put them in a plastic bag and roll them several times with a rolling pin.

Combine the products, add oil, salt, pepper if desired, stir well.

These are just a few of the feijoa recipes. With this wonderful fruit, you can bake pies and muffins, cook meat or cheese salads. Good appetite!
