Along with a temporary hut, utility rooms, a cellar, a barn and other buildings, the toilet in the country house is quite an important facility. We will not be distracted by a banal explanation of the reasons, but simply tell in detail how to build a toilet in the cottage with our own hands.
Initially, it is necessary to determine what kind of bathroom will be. This can be a separate building or a shower-toilet, where under one roof there can be various amenities. Next, you should choose the material for construction, the place and who will be involved in the construction: you yourself or a team of skilled workers. But, since we are used to doing everything on our own, we will bypass the side of expensive masters and begin the preparatory work.
Choosing a place for a country toilet
Naturally, each person has their own opinion on the location of the restroom in the country, but There are certain requirements that it is desirable to comply with:
- The toilet should be located on a flat area or at a minimum height so that the cesspool under it does not fill with water during spring snow gatherings and a change in groundwater level.
- It is necessary to observe a certain distance from other buildings and summer cottages, and if you can position the toilet from the house at 7-10 m, then it must be placed at a distance of at least 15 m from a well or a well.
- It is advisable to place a toilet with or without a shower for a summer residence in a place with a replacement for shade. In the summer, for obvious reasons, this structure is better not to overheat, but it can not be in the shade constantly. Therefore, it is best if at a distance there will be trees or some structures that can cast a shadow at certain times of the day.
- Next, be sure to pay attention to the soil on which the toilet will be built. It should not be floating or too stiff. Also, the place where the restroom or cesspool, cellar or garbage pit was already located was not suitable.
- Now, following these requirements and personal opinion, choose a place for a toilet in the country.
The design of the toilet for the summer cottage
Next, you should choose what material the building will be made of. There are actually a lot of options, but it does not make sense to consider them all, since there are several of the most popular, with a lot of advantages.
Of course, you can always pay attention to the Finnish toilet or peat, but these are bio-options. We are talking about a separate summer house, for which you need a foundation, walls and roof.
So, let's briefly consider the options that are most suitable for us.
Capital building, which is not afraid of various weather conditions, cold and heat, frost and rain. There are really many advantages to this building, and perhaps a brick toilet is the best toilet for a summer residence, but not for everyone.
The negative side of such a project and construction is the fact that it is very desirable to make a regular and solid foundation for a brick, very accurately lay and cover the structure with a hard roof, and this, alas, not everyone can do.
The most popular option that is familiar to any summer resident or owner of a private house. Wooden latrines have been known to people for decades, and almost every owner understands how to build it. But this is not the most durable construction, since it is natural for a tree to collapse and lose technical data in much less time than, for example, brick, metal and stone.
Still, building a wooden toilet is a simple and inexpensive process, which means we leave the option on a note.
Street bathrooms for summer cottages can also be constructed of metal. It is fast, reliable and of high quality, but it will require special equipment and at least one assistant. Moreover, a metal toilet will require cladding, and for this you will need to once again wonder how and what to sheathe the building inside and out.
These options are the most popular and easy to manufacture, they will not require special costs and special knowledge, which means that it is quite possible to choose from them. If such options do not suit you, you can always pay attention to ready-made toilets for summer cottages, dry closets or combined facilities, such as metal and wood, slate and metal, and so on. But here you must carefully study the design, advantages and disadvantages, as you may expect some surprises.
How to build a toilet in a summer cottage
First of all, it is necessary to draw up a drawing, create a project, draw up an estimate, carry out preparatory work. The process is time-consuming, but it will never scare a person who is ready and able to work with his hands: maybe only some tips will be needed.
Wooden country toilet: overview video
After you have determined the place and type of structure, we recommend that you carefully prepare for work. You should purchase all the necessary materials and the missing tool - this will give you the opportunity not to be distracted from the building and complete the construction on time. Before starting work, carefully check the drawing and design - It’s important not to make mistakes that can affect your free time.
First determine the type of pit. It can be a special, acquired septic tank or an ordinary cesspool. Much will depend on this: the durability of the structure, odors, the possibility of quick cleaning, and so on. The pit should be deep enough and wide, but necessarily strengthened, since a foundation or foundation will be installed on its edges.
Foundation for country toilet
The latrine in the country is installed on the foundation, but some ignore this fact and place the general structure on blocks or pipes. This is not very correct, but very fast, and you do not have to spend several days filling the foundation and preparing it.
Blocks and pipes have a number of specific disadvantages that significantly reduce the life of the structure. The blocks burst, and the toilet gives a roll, the pipes are gradually sagging or rusting, which means that the structure also deteriorates. And these are just a few drawbacks, so think carefully before making such a choice.
We, in turn, recommend a strip foundation, which does not take much time and does not fall into half the budget of the structure. The strip foundation, with a width of 20-25 cm and a depth of 40 cm (on the pillow), can be done very quickly, and it will require nothing: gravel, cement, sand, water, reinforcement, some tools and additional materials (formwork and so on Further).
Base and walls of the structure
The construction of a toilet in the country requires precise action and timely determination of materials. By choosing them and making a solid foundation, you can continue the construction.
The foundation of the structure should be placed on the finished foundation. It can be a strong and reliable beam, profile pipe, brick. Depending on which particular toilet you have chosen, further on this basis the construction of walls begins. You will need to install the supporting structure, make a high-quality crate on it and sheathe the building from the outside and from the inside - possibly with the use of insulation, insulation and so on. Do not forget about this moment, because a warm toilet is much better than a cold one, with drafts!
The roof of the country toilet
Here the choice is so great that you can even get confused, but we recommend that you choose a roof according to the materials of the walls. That is, it is not necessary to use expensive roofing material to cover a simple wooden structure, because the main thing here is tightness and complete exclusion of leaks.
Turnkey wooden toilet in the country
In addition to the general description and the construction algorithm of the various options, we decided to tell you in detail about the toilet device using one example. So, how to make a country latrine made of wood?
We will go strictly to that course, which we have already mentioned a little higher, and we will begin the installation of the toilet in the country from the pit and foundation.
The pit should be the same size as the bathroom itself, only its rear part should extend at least 50-70 cm from the wall. Thus, the toilet will be easy to clean.
We propose to combine the cesspool and the foundation - so we get a tank on the walls of which you can install the design of the toilet itself. This is not difficult, except that the walls will have to be well strengthened by installing them on a drained pillow. The foundation can be made of brick, but it can also be poured out of concrete. In the second case, we recommend reinforcing the walls for structural strength.
After the pit is ready, you can proceed with the construction of the base. You can make it from a wooden beam or pipe (preferably profile), fix it to the foundation with clamps, anchors or welding, if such an attachment to the foundation is provided in advance.
Now that the base is ready, you can proceed to the assembly of the structure. Even if it is a wooden toilet, its frame, the cube itself, can be made from a profile pipe. If this is not possible or, for personal reasons, you decide to build the building only from wood, the structure can be created from timber.
Vertical load-bearing toilets along their entire length should be crossed by a crate at least 3 times - this will give the structure the necessary strength. It is possible to use a beam of 80 x 80 mm and thicker for construction. In addition to the foundation of the structure, you will need another 6 units of timber of your chosen length, which is equal to the height of the toilet, in each corner (4) and to create rigidity for installing the door (2).
When the vertical structure is installed and secured along the length of the crate, you can create a crate under the casing. For this purpose, a mounting rail will fit, for example, 10 x 40 or 20 x 40 mm, depending on the type of casing.
We recommend using a edged board, as it has a rather original and attractive appearance, and besides, it’s easy to work with it. The board is placed on the crate vertically or horizontally, depending on your desire, and is fixed to the supporting structure with self-tapping screws or nails.
Now that the outer part of the wooden toilet is ready, you can proceed to the inside. The first thing we need is to make a "seat", since the toilet in such a design is wrong to install, and it’s impossible technically. It can be done either as a separate elevation, or as a common platform, say, on half the area of the toilet (this is what often happens). Everything is simple here: an ordinary solid construction made of timber, planking the board, waterproofing the front of the inside (a plastic film, even a new plastic bag) is perfect, fixing the toilet lid (choose it yourself, plastic or soft).
Now that the base is ready, you should install the roof and doors. We hope that no one will have a problem with the latter, since we have installed a timber for strength, and all that remains is to put the doors on the hinges, put the lock and handle. It remains only to deal with the roof. You can guess for a long time what to make of it, but you can just dwell on a wooden crate, a cut board and roofing felt. If not, then there are plenty of options: slate, tile, ondulin and even polycarbonate. The main thing is to fix the roof firmly, at an angle.
In principle, everything is almost ready, but there remain a couple of unresolved issues, unless, of course, it is necessary to resolve them - light and warming of the toilet.
You can draw light from the nearest building, throw an aluminum two-wire wire and put a cartridge with a light bulb of 40-60 W, but you can also choose an easier option - install an LED, from which there will be plenty of lighting, and you won’t need to pull wires ... a small battery will solve the problem, and enough for a few months.
As for warming, we consider it mandatory. Foam or mineral wool, polyurethane foam and insulation film will help solve this problem. Thus, you can quickly get a tight and warm toilet without drafts. Naturally, further - insulation finishing (plastic, MDF, OSB and so on) and painting on the outside. We recommend using weather-resistant paints or varnish, which can already be put on a wood treated with antiseptics.
Apparently, that’s all. Now you know how to build a country toilet with your own hands, and you can do it quickly and inexpensively, thereby ensuring, even in the yard, but comfort!
